CHAPTER EIGHT
PLAYMATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: TAKING HOLLYWOOD, MAKING HARD-CORE
Claire Hines
A month prior to the DVD release of Pirates (also known as Pirates XXX) in September 2005, the official trailer opened with the bold statement that this was to be ‘THE BIGGEST ADULT FILM PRODUCTION IN HISTORY’. Watching the one-minute-forty-three-second-long teaser trailer, it is clear that, as promised, everything about Pirates is remarkably ambitious, expensive and, well, just plain big. The trailer demonstrates that, unusually for a hard-core porn film, Pirates’ deliberate emphasis on size and scale will extend well beyond the anatomical. In addition to the generous proportions of surgically enhanced breasts, designer vaginas and epic penises so often associated with the genre’s biggest stars, the film’s Hollywood-style production values, including special effects and an original musical score, augment a feature-length plot and characters that borrow heavily from Gore Verbinski’s blockbuster film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).
Pirates’ teaser trailer is then exactly that, a big tease. It offers a potential audience the porn film’s choicest (coming) attractions and a range of pleasures. These extend from the industrial – A-list porn stars, an award-winning director, and influential adult film studios – to the aesthetic – detailed costumes and sets, sea battles and special effects. In this way Pirates was immediately advertised as a hard-core porn film with mainstream aspirations. Following the film’s successful release, media responses to what has become the Pirates phenomenon suggest that these aspirations have since been met, and possibly even exceeded. The aim of this chapter is to explore this particular porn phenomenon and to investigate Pirates as a contemporary feature-length hard-core film that has, to some extent, managed to achieve crossover status. I will consider how some filmmakers in today’s porn industry might take from Hollywood in order to make hard-core.1
